Proverbs 27:17 “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
After the 2015 season the Denver Broncos put a banner in the locker room with a Bible verse on it. Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpeneth iron”. This became the team motto as everyone worked to make everyone around them better. In 2016 the Broncos won Super Bowl 50 by sharpening each other.
“Iron Sharpeneth Iron. -It’s like a knife and a stone. The stone, though tough on the knife, makes the knife a SHARPER object. Someone rubs the knife against the stone creating friction which in turn sharpens the knife.
“So, a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” Here the Bible teaches that we, like the stone and knife, sharpeneth each other. There may be some friction, some rough patches and some tough spots- Who Sharpeneth you?
Who is making you sharper? Friends should make you sharper. Friends should not just polish you, they should sharpen you.
1. Make Your Friends Sharper – don’t dull your friends, be the iron they need
2. Stay Sharp Yourself – let yourself be sharpened by friends,
3. Sharpness is For Purpose – God has you on the sharpening block for a reason, He has a purpose
Parent tough on you? Coach yelling, pushing hard? Friend pulled you aside, tried to help you, and now your upset? IRON SHARPENETH IRON!
