Proverbs 4:4 “He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.”
In Proverbs 4 we have a really interesting look into the private home life of King David with Solomon his son. I want you to get a picture in your mind of King David sitting down with his son Solomon and having this private conversation on some of the most important truths in life.
David gives to Solomon the key ingredients to spiritual success in life, they are:
1. Lean In (4:1) David says: “Hear ye children…attend to know…” If you want to succeed you need to Lean In. You need to decide this is important and I’m going to grab ahold of it.
2. Discern Truth from Error (4:2a) David wanted Solomon to be aware of the reality of Good Doctrine vs. Bad Doctrine and to be able to discern or tell the difference between the two because if you can’t you are in big trouble.
3. Decide to Commit (4:2b-13) Knowing right and doing right are two different things. You can know God, Jesus and all the Bible answers but if you don’t commit to doing what is right you will be a spiritual failure.
4. Stay away from the Wicked (4:14-19) David as an older man knew the power of influence. He warned Solomon to stay away from those who would give him bad advice and bad examples.
5. Mind your Members (4:23-27) Real spirituality works its way from the Bible, through your eyes, into your brain, to your heart and out of every part of your body. David was instructing Solomon that God’s truths direct our mind, mouth, eyes, hands and feet (and every other part of us too).
