What is the Will of God

1 John 2:15-17 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

One of the most confusing subjects for many young people, is the will of God. It’s confusing enough, then you hear so many versions of what it is. People will talk of God speaking to their heart as if He was really speaking. They will talk about the Lord leading them. Some will shout that they have received a word from the Lord. My hope is to make it simple for anyone reading today. Eph 5:17 ,“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” The will of God is the Word of God. (Matt. 4:4; Heb. 5:13; 2 Tim. 3:16) Anything the Bible commands you to do is the will of God. Anything the Bible forbids you to do is the will of God. Where the Bible does not clearly and definitively address something, it gives you principles that can help guide your decisions and make wise choices.

Obedience to the Word of God is essential to living in the will of God. The will of God is growing in God. (Luke 3:6-9) Is there something that would hinder your growth spiritually? Is there something that would keep you from getting closer to God in your walk with Him? Many people have asked if they should take a certain job. My question, “Does it keep you from church services?” If so, it goes against the clear will of God (Hebrews 10:25). Should I move to this area where there is a good job? Is there a good, Bible-preaching church there? If not, then it would severely hinder your Christian growth. The will of God is determined by your potential. (Luke 3:8-9)

The servant wanted to work with the tree because he believed it had potential. Every believer has been given a certain amount of potential as in the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:15-30). You may ask, “How do I know my potential?” You Look at your abilities – Matthew 25:15 …to every man according to his several ability…. You increase your potential to do more for God by increasing your abilities. (Matthew 25:21) Often, we don’t know our potential, but we do know our abilities. What can you do right now? Could you sing in the choir? Do you have the time to go soulwinning? You can’t talk, but can you go as a silent partner? You may not be able to captain the bus route, but can you help pass out candy? Do what you can so you can do more. (Philippians 4:13)
