Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Only light can drive away darkness. Jesus came to a dark world and proclaimed that He was he Light of the world (John 8:12). When we receive Him, we receive His light, and we, along with other Christians, become the light of the world (Matt. 5:14).
We are not to hide our light. In the verses following our text for today, Jesus tells us that we are to be like a city on ah ill and like a burning candle on a candle holder. Our light is to e visible.
There are four things in our text that our Lord tells us to do. 1. We are to let out light shine. 2. We are to do good works. 3. We are to let others see our good works. 4. We are to glorify our heavenly Father.
We easily understand all of these but one. How are we to let our lights shine? As the light of the moon is reflected light of the sun, our light is the reflected light of our Lord. The closer we live to Him the brighter our light will shine. In that light we can do good works that will bring glory to His name.
