As you look around today at young preachers all over America it seems as if many are leaving the old-time way. This blog post is not at all a knock to them nor does this post mean in anyway that I am better than they are. This is just a simple blog on why I am not leaving the old time way and hopefully someone who is considering leaving and heading in the direction that many others are taking will read this and reconsider.
When I write and say the old-time way, I am writing in regards of the music that is to be considered the old-time way. I am writing in regards to the Bible that is to be considered the old-time way. I am writing in regards to the standards that are to be considered the old-time way. I am writing in regards to our Baptist heritage that is to be considered the old-time way. There are many areas that you can look at and if you stand a certain way on that issue you will be considered “old-fashion” “oldpaths” “old time-way”. Many preachers are leaving the old-time way for many different reasons. Some are leaving because they are just tired of fighting the world, sin and the devil, some are leaving because they have bit into the lie that the only way to build a church is to back of off the standards and in order to get people to come you have to change your music and that is a lie from the devil. Some are leaving just because it has always been in their heart from the beginning. Some are leaving because they have friends that are leaving, some are leaving because of the sin of those in leadership in different circles and they have seen the hypocrisy and so they are leaving. I could list many more but for time sake I will stop there.
I have friends who have left the old-time way and when they read this I hope and pray that they do not take this as a personal attack on them because they know that I love them regardless, but there has to be a line and someone has to stand and say regardless of what has happened, regardless of who has left and went a different direction it is not right. Now I am not writing about methods and how one gets the job done. I believe that some things that work in certain places of the country will not work in other places. Methods change but the Word of God doesn’t change. Methods change but our music should always be holy and Christ honoring. Methods change but our Bible shouldn’t change. Methods change but our message shouldn’t change. This will be simple and short but let me list a few reasons I am not changing from the old-time way!!! I love what Paul told Timothy in II Timothy 3:14 “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; There is so much in that verse and if that was the only verse I had to keep me on the path that I have been put on it is plenty good enough. Timothy was told by Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost to continue!! So I am going to give three reasons from this verse.
I. It is what I have learned!
Paul told Timothy to continue in the things that he has learned. I have been taught that the KJB was the Word of God, so I will continue down that path II Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: I have been taught that the world is trying to infiltrate the church through their worldly music and that we need to hold fast to the music that is holy and Christ honoring. Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;I have been taught that soul winning is what works and what Jesus commanded for the church and that is to go and tell the world about the saving grace of our Lord. Mark 16:15 Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. We as Christians should present our bodies a living sacrifice unto the Lord. People should be able to tell by our dress, language and by the way that we carry ourselves that we are Christians. Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
II. It has been proven and tested!
Paul not only said what you have been taught Timothy, but assured of. My father has been Pastoring and preaching for over thirty years and the old-time way has worked very well for him and he has been my teacher and mentor. There has been great men of God go before me that has proven and tried the old-time way and it has worked for them. I see a lot of young preachers and even some older and there reasons for leaving hasn’t been tried and tested. They are bringing in this music that is so full of the world and sensuality it is pitiful. The emphasis is more on the beat than the words of the song, their emphasis is more on there dance then the words of the song, the emphasis is more on them worshipping in spirit then on who they are worshipping in truth. Now I believe most definitely that where there is liberty the Spirit of the Lord is, II. Corinthian’s 3:17.
III. I know who has taught me!
There are several men who are responsible for teaching me the things that I have learned and that I have been assured of. My father is one of those men. I can remember as a little boy my dad teaching me the Word of God and that it was the perfect Word of God. I can name many men who over the years are responsible for teaching me the things that I have learned. They were and are great men of character who taught me what I have learned and am still learning. Don’t allow the fall of some to persuade you to get away from what you have been taught and assured of. I am glad that Timothy stayed with what he had been taught and assured of. Paul said to Timothy Continue in the things you have learned, continue in the things you have been assured of, and I say to you and I continue in the things that we have learned and the things we have been assured of!! II Timothy 3:14 “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; So many young preachers are leaving the old-time way but I say to you and I CONTINUE!!!
I could go on and on and list many more reasons but these three are plenty for me. If you have any questions at all feel free to email or inbox me any time if you need to. If you disagree with me please do not feel like I am shooting at you. This blog post in no shape form or fashion is a shot at anyone I assure you. Even if we disagree in one or more areas if you believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven and there is no other way than we be brothers!!
