Whatever or Whatsoever

Perhaps many would look back to the 60s and 70s as the time when an attitude began among young people. An attitude of   NO BOUNDARIES.   NO RULES.     ANYTHING GOES.

It was summed up in the music of those eras lyrics like “Runaway Child”    — Not Rock Song—Temptations

You’re in punishment ‘cause your mother wants to raise you in the right way

But you don’t care cause you already made up your mind, you wanna run away.

“Breaking all the rules” “Were not gonna take it” “It can’t be wrong if it feels so right”

John 2:1-11

And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

I am not even going to go into what we have today. It is nothing but rebellion set to rhythm .

But the truth is this attitude began with Lucifer, it was adopted by Adam, and since then man has had to battle this rebellious attitude.

In the 90’s, teens began to express this attitude with a word that actually quite vividly describes it. Anytime someone was saying something that a teen didn’t want to hear, they would just put their hand up and say…

“WHATEVER”.

I remember it was on shirts, pants, notebooks, on TV, in movies.  My sister used it ALL THE TIME.

Dinner is ready.   WHATEVER. Mom said you need to clean your room. WHATEVER.    Etc.

Everyone said it. At first it was just teens and young adults, then moms and dads began to pick it up as a part of their everyday language.

It is not as advertised as it once was, but the attitude is even more prevalent. It is worse. Think with me.

Mom gives instruction……. (You may not say it, some of you may, but in your heart,)   WHATEVER

Dad says… (You would never say it to him, but in your heart and by your disobedience)   WHATEVER

Preacher preaches a sermon… (You would never stand up at altar time and say it, but when you don’t obey the Holy Spirit you are basically saying…)   Hand to Preacher….. WHATEVER!

In our text, Jesus is at a wedding. They have begun the reception and have run out of drinks. (Wine here is grape juice not fermented wine Hab 2:15 Jesus would never give someone strong drink to drink)

They have a problem. Mary comes to Jesus to see if He can help. Jesus answers her a little sharper than we expect. Letting her know it is not His time. Jesus does not touch anything here, nor does anything touch Him.

He tells them what to do and they do it and water becomes grape juice or wine.

Mary tells the servants    “Whatsoever Jesus tells you to do…. Do It”.

Those servants attitude was the determining factor in whether or not the wedding was a success. Their attitude was the main decider of whether this first miracle was going to happen. Their attitude could have been either

Whatever……………. This guy is nuts… water from these wash pots. He will kill us. I’m not doing it. No way.

Or Whatsoever…………..We will do what He says and follow His Words no matter what.

The Whatever attitude is actually a variant of the Whatsoever attitude. It is the direct opposite.

Whatever implies…. I don’t care.   I’m not interested in that.   I tried that before. I don’t like that.

I have had enough of that. I have heard that long enough. I’m done.

Too many times we as Christians develop this type of worldly attitude. We just say to everything spiritual… WHATEVER !!!!!!!!!

I don’t care.   I’m not interested in that.   I tried that before. I don’t like that.

I have had enough of that. I have heard that long enough. I’m done.

I don’t care about my parents…. Hey mom, hey dad, hey grandparents who are raising me… WHATEVER!!!

I don’t care about my education…. Hey Christian School, hey College, hey grades,…. WHATEVER !!!!!!!!

I don’t care about my future…. Hey potential, Hey career, Hey surrender, Hey call, Hey will of God, WHATEVER!!!

I don’t care about my life… Hey people who love me, hey great personality, hey abilities, hey uniqueness… WHATEVER!!!!

I don’t care about my church… Hey Sunday School Teacher, Hey Bus Kids, Workers, Hey Youth Pastor, Hey Pastor, Hey Wives, WHATEVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might never say that verbally, but your attitude and your spirituality, your obedience to the Holy Spirit at an altar call, SCREAMS it LOUD and CLEAR!!!

Whatsoever says anything, anytime, anywhere… I am yours Lord.

Whatsoever says anything parents ask, anything required for school, no matter what God’s will is.

Whatsoever is submissive, sold out, given, open, yielded, and surrendered.

Anyone can talk a whatsoever with their lips, but you attitude and your spirituality, your obedience to the Holy Spirit at an altar call SCREAMS it LOUD and CLEAR !!!

Let me give you 3 Statements about Whatever and Whatsoever…

1. You Don’t Have To Understand Everything To Do Whatsoever

I want you to listen to me and listen to me really good. I think one of the biggest reasons teens say Whatever to the Christian life is because they think nobody cares. They can’t understand how someone can care about them and yet tell them the truth.

They feel that Mom, Dad, Pastor, Youth Pastor, and even Jesus don’t care.

They feel like we feel about Mary, they have gone to those people shared their need and those people gave an answer that was not really what they wanted to hear.

But look at the scripture, Jesus meets the need. He did care.

Your mom cares. She’s not perfect. She has made some mistakes. She has some regrets, issues and problems. But she loves you and wants you to do right.

Your dad cares. He’s not perfect. He has made mistakes. He has said some things, done some things, but he loves you and wants you to do right.

Your pastor and youth pastor care. He’s is a man. He has flaws. He will not always say things perfect, but he loves you and is trying to lead you in the path of right.

Jesus cares.

O yes, He cares:

I know He cares,

His heart is touched with my grief;

When the days are weary

The long night dreary,

I know my Savior cares

But Bro. Davis you don’t understand… I know.. And I will not pretend like I do understand everything about you and your life. But I don’t have to understand to do whatsoever.

I don’t understand anymore than you do. I just chose to Do Whatsoever.

Stop trying to understand how everything works and just decide to do whatsoever God wants.

2. You Must Make The Choice Whatever or Whatsoever

I know all of you teens in this room are excited about growing up. Let me tell you one of the most sobering things about growing up… CHOICES.

You will go home to your parents and make a choice of Whatever or Whatsoever.

You will go back to school in a month and make a choice of Whatever  or Whatsoever.

You will go to your church Sunday and make a choice of Whatever or Whatsoever.

It is your choice.

It is not because of anyone, anything, any situation, or any excuse.  It’s YOUR CHOICE!!!!

But you are here this week. You are at camp. You will hear a lot more preaching the rest of this week.

Each sermon, the preacher will preach, the Spirit will move, and you will be given the opportunity to do whatsoever God wants you to do.

But you will make the choice.

Not your MOM, Not your DAD, Not your Pastor, Not your Youth Pastor, Not your Friends, Not your Brothers and Sisters.   YOU!

3.  The Results Of Whatever and Whatsoever

You can decide today and for your life than you are going to give your parents, pastor, God the hand and tell them WHATEVER!

I don’t care.   I’m not interested in that.   I tried that before. I don’t like that.

I have had enough of that. I have heard that long enough. I’m done.

That is Your Choice.

But just know every choice has consequences.

Whatever Brings Bondage:

I keep telling people and the Holy Spirit that I don’t care and each time I am painting myself into a corner.

They used to paint floors. You always wanted to do the corner and work your way to the door so you could get out. When you didn’t often times you painted yourself into a corner and couldn’t get out without stepping on the paint.

You are going to keep burning bridges with the people that love you so much and care about you until one day you are going to find yourself in a little corner, all alone.

Because anytime someone tried to help you, you stuck your hand in their face and said  WHATEVER!!!
At first it was funny and everyone laughed. Your friends loved you for it.

Then the more you rebelled and turned from right, the more you were loved.   WHATEVER to everyone!!!

Your parents, pastor and youth pastor try to help… you get mad at them for telling you what to do and sticking their nose in your business…. Now you scream with an angry, mean  WHATEVER !!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait a minute your friend just WHATEVERED you…. This isn’t how it is supposed to work…

You cry…. But your friends don’t care remember… WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need someone to listen…. But they’re not interested…. WHATEVER !!!!!!!!!!!!

Then you began to see the effects. Your parent’s pain was evident.

Then one day your parents will pass away and you will want to be close.  But you can’t. Why?

Cause you are in the corner with your WHATEVERS!!!

Whatsoever Brings Blessing:

I want to give some of the best advice in the Bible…. Whatsoever He saith unto you do it

Listen to your parents…. Listen to your Preacher….

When the Holy Spirit speaks to your Heart.  Whatsoever He saith… DO IT!

Don’t raise your hand to the Holy Spirit and tell Him WHATEVER!   Say to Him WHATSOEVER!

Whatsoever you saith to do, I will Do It.
