John 2:5 “His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”
Perhaps many would look back to the 60’s and 70’s as the time when an attitude began among young people. An attitude of NO BOUNDARIES, NO RULES, and ANYTHING GOES. An attitude of you’re in punishment because your mother wants to raise you in the right way. But the truth is, this attitude began with Lucifer, and was adopted by Adam; since then, man has had to battle this rebellious attitude. In the 90’s, teens began to express this attitude with a word that actually quite vividly describes it. Anytime someone was saying something that a teen didn’t want to hear, they would just put their hand up and say… “Whatever”. I remember it was on shirts, pants, notebooks, on TV, in movies. My sister used it ALL THE TIME. It is not as advertised as it once was, but the attitude is even more prevalent. It is worse.
Think with me. Mom gives instruction……. (You may not say it outloud, some of you may, but in your heart) WHATEVER. Dad says… (You would never say it to him, but in your heart and by your disobedience) WHATEVER. Preacher preaches a sermon… (You would never stand up at altar time and say it, but when you don’t obey the Holy Spirit you are basically saying) …WHATEVER! In our text, Jesus is at a wedding. They have begun the reception and have run out of drinks. They have a problem. Mary comes to Jesus to see if He can help. Jesus answers her a little sharper than we expect. Letting her know it is not His time. Jesus does not touch anything here, nor does anything touch Him. He tells them what to do and they do it and water becomes grape juice or wine. Mary tells the servants, “Whatsoever Jesus tells you to do…. Do It”. The men have a choice- An attitude of “Whatever” – This guy is nuts… water from these wash pots. He will kill us. I’m not doing it. No way. Or an attitude of “Whatsoever” – We will do what He says and follow His Words no matter what. Too many times, we as Christians develop this type of worldly attitude. We just say to everything spiritual… WHATEVER! We need Christians to say… WHATSOEVER! Whatever brings bondage. Whatsoever brings blessing. Don’t raise your hand to the Holy Spirit and tell Him WHATEVER! Say to Him WHATSOEVER! Whatsoever says anything, anytime, anywhere… I am yours Lord. Whatsoever is submissive, sold out, given, open, yielded, and surrendered.
