Ephesians 4:22 “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts”
Paul said we are to put off the “old man”. Do you have some clothes in your closet that are just old and you need to get rid of them? I keep clothes a long time, but some of them just get out of style. I have a hard time throwing them out. I just have to take a hard look in my closet and say, these have got to go. Let’s look at some “old man” attributes that we as Christians need to get rid of.
Evil Speaking – The Bible says for “evil-speaking” to be put away from you. Put away lying and corrupt communication. Three times in these scriptures, Paul says to put off the old man concerning your speech, and put on the new man by being kind.
Anger – God’s Word says we need to put away anger. Oh, you may hide it, but it is there. Seething under your skin and making its way out in ways that are so unattractive. Anger is like a dirty garment. I don’t like to be dirty. If I get something on me, I can’t wait to get it off. I get out in the yard and get in the dirt and pull up weeds, sweating, crawling around on the ground. When I am finished, I can’t wait to pull those clothes off and get in the shower. Oh, how good that feels! Cool down, put on clean clothes. But you know, some of us like to keep those old dirty rags when it comes to anger. We like to keep it on even though it is dirty and makes us look bad. We think others can’t see it, but it is there in plain view. Take it off. Don’t be angry.
Complaining Spirit – This is like having a stinky perfume on. Nothing is worse. Sometimes when I am in choir practice, someone will come in like they have taken a bath in their perfume. It just about chokes me to death. There have been several occasions that I have had to leave or stand at the door because my throat just closes up. What kind of trail are you leaving? When you come into a room, does the atmosphere change for the good or for the bad? When we complain, it just brings everything down around us.
What does your spiritual closet look like? Is it full of bitterness, greed, jealousy, envy, hatred, backbiting, anger, malice, etc? If it is, get rid of it. It is not what you need to be wearing. Romans 13:14 “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.” Clothe yourself in the image of Christ. Put on all the glorious attributes that are available through Jesus.
