Things in Hell That We Need in Our Youth Department

The Classic passage that proves the existence of a place called Hell. It proves that Hell is an awful place. It proves the torments the persecutions of Hell are true. This verse just reaffirms many other scriptures that describe Hell as an awful place. Tonight’s sermon may seem a little unusual, but don’t all of my sermons seem that way? I want to preach on the subject “Six Things in Hell That We Need in Our Youth Department”.Luke 16:19-31

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:

28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Let’s get right into it tonight:

  • Luke 16:24 says,     And he cried

HE CRIED. HE CRIED. HE CRIED. HE CRIED. Do you hear that? He cried. The second  thing we need in our churches is the same things that the rich man and millions of others shed in Hell everyday,

I. Tears

If we could peel back the roof of hell tonight and peek inside the fiery abyss, it wouldn’t take long for us to hear the cries of the eternally damned souls.    The decibel level of the cries is immeasurable. The sound would be unbearable. Who wouldn’t cry. The burning souls have reason to cry. Their eternity is sealed. There is no hope for them. There seems to be no hope for others. Ohh, but wait. There is a hope. There is one. Here is one. You are one. You are one. Everyday the souls of  men fall into hell. Imagine someone you love dying without God and burning tonight in a devils hell forever. They will cry. They will cry. Will you cry.

Psalmist said in Psalm 126:5  “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy”. Are you reaping any joy? Are you sowing any tears? God said in Isa 38:5 “I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears.”

Has God saw any tears from you lately? Are you sowing any tears for people that you know are going to hell? Are you sowing any tears for people that are backslid? Go ahead. Tear up. Tear up in here tonight. Let God touch your heart in here and then act like nothing happened tomorrow. Whenever a soul drops into hell, tears begin to fall. If someone dies in your family that is unsaved, don’t you dare cry at their funeral if you haven’t shed any tears for their soul while they were here.

Paul said

I wrote unto you with many tears                       2Co 2:4

Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears    Acts 20:19

I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.            Acts 20:31

David shed so many tears that he said

My tears have been my meat day and night                 Psa 42:3

Put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book         Psa 56:8

Jeremiah was so burdened for Israel that he said

9:1        Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night

Lam 2:18    let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease

All throughout the Bible it talks about people crying, weeping, lamenting, mourning, and shedding tears. We need to get back to some old fashioned weeping and wailing here on earth that may prevent weeping and wailing in hell. Let go. Men. Women. Boys. Girls. Where are the tears. There are many people in hell who are crying for their loved ones. Is there any in here tonight. Who can think of a loved one that is lost?

Answer this:

Have you shed any tears for them lately?

People in Hell have.

  • Luke 16:24 “And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me,”

As the lost souls in hell shed tears each one is now a believer. Everyone in hell believes in God. And just as the rich man did, each soul is begging God. The third thing in hell that we need in our churches is

II. Prayer

You ever hear the verse “pray without ceasing”? That is a command from Paul to us. Most of us shouldn’t worry about praying without ceasing until we get the actual praying part down. People in hell are prayer warriors. There is no break from the flames, the gnashing, the wailing,. Amidst the cries of hell are prayers. Some for self. Some for others. Some just for some relief. This morning as we got ready for church, watched the news, got the kids ready and in the hustle and bustle of preparing, we didn’t pray. But while you watched the news, the souls of hell were praying.

While you ate breakfast, the souls of hell were praying.

While you slept a little later, the souls of hell were praying.

I am not going to spend 15 minutes on prayer. You all know that God wants us to pray. You all know that God answers prayer. You all know that it is a sin not to pray. But what I want you to see is that when you don’t pray, some sinner in hell is praying more than you. When you feel too tired to pray – Think of the soul that has been in hell for 5000 years and hasn’t stopped praying yet. When you feel too sick or uncomfortable to pray – Think of the soul that is burning in hell and yet praying. The greatest thing is God hears and answers our prayers. He doesn’t theirs.

  • Luke 16:24    “send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue;”

People in hell would kill for a drop of water.

III. Thirst

Imagine the rich man. He just died a few minutes ago. No doubt, as he faired sumptuously everyday, that he probably had plenty to drink the night he died. However, he now cries out for water. He is thirsty.

The rich man is so desperate for water that he doesn’t even mind the finger of that wretched beggar that sat at his gate full of sores to be the one who brings it to him. In fact, the rich man would have licked water off of Lazarus’ sore, bleeding finger. He was that thirsty.

There are a lot of people thirsty in hell tonight. I wonder though. How many of us are thirsty for the word of God.

Isa 55:1-3

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye,     buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labor for that which     satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul     delight itself in fatness.

Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an     everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

Hang on now, He said everyone that is thirsty. Are you thirsty for some preaching? If not you haven’t enjoyed the message. Are you thirsty for some Bible? Are you thirsty for a walk with God?

Mat 5:6

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

John 7:37-38

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let     him come unto me, and drink.

He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Jesus said, if you come to me thirsty, I won’t just take care of that need. I’ll make the water flow out of you. Are you thirsty? People in Hell are thirsty. They are dying for water, dying for the word, dying for a drink.

Psa 63:1-2

    A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, thou art my God; early     will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

Psa 42:2

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

I am thirsty tonight for God to move in this service. Are you thirsty tonight. Some of you look like you could care less about the service. You are not thirsty.

Some of you are so full of the world that you cant be thirsty for the things of God.

I tell you this much. People in hell are thirsty. The church should be thirsty too.

  • Luke 16:24  “for I am tormented in this flame”

Hold on to your seats now. Hell is a place of real, live, hot, burning, fire. There is fire in     Hell tonight. It is burning just as hot as it ever has.

IV. Fire

Matt 5:22    Mentions Hell Fire

Matt 18:9    Talks about being cast into Hell Fire

Revelation 20:14-15    Speaks of “the lake of Fire”

Mark 9:43-48

And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than     having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of     God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Did you notice the statement, and the fire is not quenched? There is an abundance of real fire in hell. However, there isn’t much fire in our churches today. Sure we can hoop and holler at a ball game. But where is that fire at our churches. Sure we can get excited about a raise, good fortune, good news, babies, cars, etc. But where is our fire for God and the church.

Where is the fire of the pulpit? Where is the fire in the pew? Where is the fire on the piano?

You see I’m afraid tonight that there is a lot of fire in hell, but there isn’t much at all in our churches. We need to rekindle that fire in our hearts, in our Christian lives, in our church and in our pulpits. We need to preach the fire so that souls wont burn in hell fire. We need to be fired up so that we wont send anyone to hell fire. We need to be hot for God so that others wont turn cold on Him. We need to combat every degree of Hell Fire with some old fashioned, spirit filled, God sent, Heaven Fire.

  • Luke 16:26    “between us and you there is a great gulf fixed”

In Hell perhaps the worst feeling for the lost souls that are damned for eternity is the separation that they must endure. There is separation in hell. There isn’t much in our churches.

V. Separation

I will not belabor the point. I’ve preached it before. You’ve heard it before. God’s people are to be separated from the world. Just as God has separated the eternally blessed souls from the eternally damned souls, so should we be separate from the world. As I began my Bible reading this year, I started something new. I began to write down thoughts on every chapter I read. As I was going through the first few books, I was shocked as I found out how much God spoke to Israel about separation. Listen, we are Christians. We should act, look, talk, sit, walk, dress, and behave like Christians. There are certain things that Lazarus had that the rich man couldn’t have. There are certain things that the rich man was doing that even if he wanted to, Lazarus couldn’t.

We are different. We need to act like. We Shouldn’t Be Gambling, Drinking, Drugs, Cussing, Telling Dirty Jokes.

We need to get a hold of the right music, The right movies, The right friends, The right clothes, The right haircut, and the right spirit.

  • Luke 16:26-27        Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:

For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

The rich man said, OK if Lazarus cant come to me, send him to my brothers, I don’t want them to come here. Every  lost soul in hell tonight has a love for soul winning.

VI. Soul-Winning

This is perhaps the most important point of the sermon. Because you see, this is the only way that we can help keep people from going to hell. I am not going to read all the verses. You’ve heard them before. Let me just leave you with a couple of thoughts. Imagine tonight a man in hell crying out. As the flames of hell surround him, he isn’t crying for himself. He is crying for his family. He pleads with the innkeeper of hell to let someone go back and tell them the gospel. Everyday the millions of people in hell make their lists of people on earth who are lost and on their way to hell. They hope that one day someone will be allowed to tell their family the gospel. My friend that someone is you. God has commanded us to win souls. Spread the gospel of Christ. There is some lost soul out there that needs you to take a hint from hell, and be a soul winner.

I have challenged you in many ways.

1     We need to pray

2    We need to shed tears

3    We need to thirst for God

4    We need fire

5    We need to be separated

6     We must be soul winners.

There are people in hell who would trade you everything they ever owned for an opportunity to make a decision tonight. Will you take advantage of your opportunity?

I want us to have fun, I want us to have friends, but we need some things in our hearts and in our youth group.
