The Influence of an Environment

Here is the story of Peter. The preacher, the leader, the inner circle, the spokesman for the disciples. He stands around with the wrong crowd. (These were the people who wanted to kill Jesus) And now he denies knowing Jesus and cusses to prove it.  WOW!

Mark 14:66-71

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.[a]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”

Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

The reason the Bible tells us to keep a close eye upon those we walk with, counsel with, stand with, and sit with is because those who are around us, eventually make up what is in us. There is an influence from every environment. Our environment affects our lives. Whether we realize it or not, what surrounds us affects us. Don’t tell me that what we are in and around doesn’t affect us. It does.

Lot and Sodom- Ruins his Godly testimony, probably involved in homosexuality, sin.

Abraham and Egypt- Lies because of who he was around.

Aaron and Israel- Changes his stand because of the cow worshipping people.

Samson and Delilah- Falls into sin, tells all, serves the enemy, loses eyes, dies.

Naomi and Moab- Follows crowd to Moab, leaves full and comes back empty.

Saul and Amalekites- He and people spare Agag and spoil. Costs him the kingdom.

David and Bathsheeba- Wrong place, wrong time, wrong person. God judges.

Solomon and Wives- They turned his heart away from his God.

Many of the Kings- Did wrong in the sight of the Lord. Most were wicked.

Esther and The King- She disagreed with Mordecai standing for right.

Job and his friends- At first he was fine. Then they came and he lost it.

Peter, John Mark, Demus, Ananias and Saphira, Church at Galatia, Churches in Revelation.

There are tons of illustrations in the Bible of the influence of environment.

There are even more personal ones. That I know and love.

Your environment will influence you.Your environment WILL influence you

What should you do?

  1. Be Watchful of What You Do Prov 1:10
  2. Be Watchful of Who You Know Prov 1:15
  3. Be Watchful of Where You Go Prov 4:14
  4. Be Willing To Walk Away Prov 4:15

Acts 2:14        Peter standing up with the eleven.

Peter preaches at Pentecost and thousands are saved.

What  was the difference?        His environment!

Peter at one time denied the Lord, but now he is boldly proclaiming the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ! The environment has an effect on you, whether you want it to or not. There is nothing that you can do about the fact that an environment very influential. This is why it is so important for Christians to be around the correct environment. If Christians will stay around the right environment then there will be a pressure to live correctly! Whether you are in the correct environment or not will help determine whether you succeed as a Christian or not. There are many Biblical and personal example of people that were in the wrong environment and examples in the correct environment. What environment will influence you?
