All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.
Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
This week many of us will travel to see our family or we will have family travel in to see us. Lots of work will go into the preparation for a large meal and a time of fellowship with our closest family. I am sure we all would like everyone to think it is just like the “Cleavers” or the “Waltons” but I would say we all have stories that are more like the saying
“Thanksgiving is about getting your entire dysfunctional under one roof and hoping the police don’t get called… AGAIN this year!!!” LOL
Ok… Maybe your Thanksgiving has never been interrupted by your local law enforcement, but I’m sure you have some interesting stories of “family” time…
We all can laugh at such experiences because we too have gone through them. We know all about the cooking disasters, rooming issues, intense moments of fellowship and all that goes along with the Holidays. But we also know of the joy, happiness, love, sharing, caring and closeness that come as well. The spirit of Thanksgiving is the family love, care, happiness and closeness.
The Bible says in Prov 15:15 that we can keep a “continual feast”. That is like an overtime Thanksgiving!!! Say What!!!
Imagine if the sweet joys of Thanksgiving were available all year. A Continual Feast.
Is this really possible? Solomon thought so and the Bible tells us how we can have Thanksgiving 365.
I. Start With the Heart
Do you see how important the heart is to this truth?
In Prov 15:7-15 the heart is mentioned 6 times in just those 8 verses.
If you want to Keep the Spirit of Thanksgiving 365 days a year, you must keep your heart…
Prov 4:23- Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Keep Your Heart Serving- ( 7 , 14 )
Keep Your Heart Searched- (10-11)
Keep Your Heart Singing- (13)
These things will carry Thanksgiving all year. Thanksgiving 365.
A Continual Feast.
II. Stay Positive
Notice the first word FIRST.. not the comparison. The First word is BETTER.
These verses in no way mean that it is better to be poor than to have money… that makes no sense.
What the Bible and the wisest man in the world is trying to show us is that we should be happy with what the Will of God gives us. It is BETTER than the trouble or hatred that life outside the will of God may bring.
The riches and dinner are just illustrations, the key here is the fear of the Lord and the LOVE!
The key here is not what you have, it is how you are taking what you HAVE!
If we want to have Thanksgiving 365, we must learn how to stay positive.
Give a Compliment Not a Criticism
Be a Supporter Not a Suspect
Encourage rather than Discourage.
Thanksgiving doesn’t just have to be one day.. it can be the whole year!
A Continual Feast!
III. Stop Fighting
A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.
Just resolve in your heart right now. I am not going to let something that will not matter in 2 weeks get me upset.
Every year when some families get together, there is someone that has to swallow pride, control their spirit and not get upset at someone in their family. BE THAT PERSON!
Don’t let a situation, circumstance, statement, attitude or even a person have control of your spirit.
Holiday time is notorious for arguments, fights and family disagreements. Have you ever thought it is also notorious for suicides?
There is nothing worth your relationship with your parents, siblings, family and especially your LIFE!
If you can stop worrying about a problem or issue for a day, get over it! Love your family and stop fighting.
AND…. If you can put it away for Thanksgiving Day, put it away for Thanksgiving 365. A Continual Feast.
IV. Seek to Live for Others
A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!
Every year when people are at our houses we cater to them. We buy special food for them. Do special things for them. Take them places. All for them.
Why just during the Holidays? Why not 365? Why not live for Others all the time?
Why not kind words and deeds every week at church?
Why not a special meal here and there all the time for your family?
Imagine if you overlooked your family’s faults all year, gave all year, cared for others all year, were thankful all year, hugged all year, said “I love you” all year,
What if you lived your life every day like you will live it for your family during the Holidays?
Living Loving. Caring. Sharing. Kind. Encouraging. Giving. Helping. Forgiving.
