Sardis was a river city, a popular metropolis. It was populated and powerful. The city was consumed with idol worship. The temples were filled with prostitutes. This was a wicked, wicked city. Sin flooded the streets. People were blind. Not only was the city sinful, the church was dead. The Christians at Sardis Baptist Church had a name they lived, they had an act they put on, but truly spiritually they were dead. Jesus rebukes the church at Sardis from the beginning of His letter. He only makes one positive statement. In verse 4 He says, “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white for they are worthy”
And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
In the middle of this wicked, sinful city and this dead, worldly church there was some people even in Sardis who were living right. We live in a world that resembles Sardis. Sin is ever growing. Idolatry is very prevalent. This world is waxing worse and worse. We are Christians living in an Unchristian and even Antichristian world.
Statistics tell us that:
We cant live Holy in this unholy world. We cant love God in a world where self is number 1.
We cant be faithful in the a quitters world.
We cant raise children, work jobs, keep good home in the world where so much sin, wickedness and trouble exists. BUT WE CAN!!!! Our church reminds me of the few names in Sardis who were serving God. In a world of wickedness, filled with sin and wrong, EVEN IN SARDIS there were some serving God. EVEN IN SARDIS there were some happy marriages. EVEN IN SARDIS there were some doing right. EVEN IN SARDIS there were some godly homes. EVEN IN SARDIS there were some faithful.
As we live in this age of sin and wickedness and as we see even churches infiltrated with the poison of worldliness and the crippling power of sin, I want you to know you can still live spiritually. You can survive spiritually in Sardis. TEENS MEN LADIES
How can we live spiritual in an unspiritual environment? You can.
(1) I know thy works,
There some people who do things for God and fail. But all people who do nothing for God fail.
In order to survive spiritually in Sardis we must tie our hearts to the things of God by working.
Those who were part of the few that survived spiritually in Sardis, WORKED.
They did something. They were a part of the church.
(2) Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain
Especially in Sardis, we have got to keep our watch.
It was the Christians in Sardis who let their guard down that failed.
The Devil is sly he is always attacking the Christian. We must keep our guard and watch.
To Survive Spiritually In Sardis we must
Watch our Acquaintance: Those whom we fellowship with, talk to, listen to, hang around.
Watch our Influences: Television, Internet, Radio
Watch our Lifestyle: Attitude, Appearance, Activities
The few that survived in Sardis Watched.
(2-3) Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast,
It is easy to be strong on Sunday. Most Christians fold Mon-Sat.
Serving God is not always the easiest thing to do. Living Right is not always convenient and comfortable.
We must withstand. Endure. Go On. Keep Going. Push Ahead.
We must withstand Attacks From the Devil, From the World, From the Flesh
We must withstand Apathy Many get so caught up in Sardis they just throw hands up and don’t care.
We must withstand. The going gets tough sometimes. We must push toward the mark.
Lastly, the most important key to surviving spiritually in Sardis is
IV. WALK WITH GOD
(4) Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
The few names in Sardis that served God, they walked with God.
Walking with God is more than just a cliché. It is vital to survival in Sardis.
Walking with God is
Bible Reading Hearing From God
Prayer Listening To God
Surrender to HS Obeying God
I am so glad that in this world, in the Sardis we live in. Full of sin, wickedness, immorality and wrong.
In a day where churches promote and practice the same sins of the world.
We can survive. We can live spiritual. We can do right. We can serve God.
We can survive spiritually in Sardis.
WORK, WATCH, WITHSTAND, and WALK WITH GOD
