2 Timothy 2:1-4 “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
The word snare means: to catch, to ensnare, to entangle; to bring into unexpected evil, perplexity, or danger. It is pretty much a trap.
During the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese would dig shallow holes, cover it with dirt, leaves, and other things to hide the mine. When American soldiers would step on them, they would explode. The force of the mine was not only to kill the one who stepped on the mine, but to injure all those around them. Because of the exploded mine, healthy soldiers would have to carry wounded bodies back off the line for help; damaging a number of other troops on the front line.
The devil has snares or traps laid out on the pathway of my life and yours. His intention is not only to blow us up, but blow us out as well. It is to take us down so that it might bring spiritual wounds, harm, and hindrances to those all around us. There is danger in this thing called snares. There have been people over the many years this church has been in existence who were the very backbone of this local church. People you would have never dreamed would quit on God, but today they are out of God’s house. God’s will is not even a part of their vocabulary. Their testimony is destroyed, their homes are broken all to pieces, and their children don’t even attend the house of God. What puts fear in my heart is that if this could happen to them, it could also happen to me! All we have to do is get out of step with God. Then it will only be a matter of time that the devil will have a snare out there that will blow you up and blow you out.
1. Snares Can Trip You Up
When you are tripped up you are off balance. Then you are either wavering to the left or wavering to the right.
There is no stability in your life. The Bible declares: James 1:8 “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
The devil glories in nothing more than seeing people inconsistent, unconcerned, and untrue to the very foundations of our faith.
2. Snares Can Tangle You
Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free and be not entangled with the yoke of bondage.”
This verse holds implication of a spider web. All of us have seen spider webs. When you look at them there seems to be nothing at all. However, if you let an innocent insect fly into them, it will entangle them the harder it tries to get out, the more entangled it becomes.
The insect thought it could breeze right through. It thought it could have the experience of it, but not get entangled with it.
I submit to you that sin may look simple, and like nothing on the forefront, but once it gets you involved, you are going to find out that you are dealing with something that is much greater than you are.
You better stay as far away from sin as you possibly can, because once you get involved with the web of sin, the harder you try to get out, the more entangled you become.
3. Snares Can Trap You
Psalm 69:22 “Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.”
When trapping animals, you put out a bait that will entice them and draw them away from what they know is right. Just as that coyote thought that the bait would be good for him. It was ultimately the thing that led to his demise. Once trapped, their not dead, but miserable.
This is just how sin does. It puts a little something out there that looks good, but little do you know that just one step away you are about to get trapped into something you can not get out of.
Teenager! You would be surprised at the potential staring at this screen, but how that goes will depend on what you must avoid which is all of the traps around you.
I could give you story after story of people who were doing great things for God, but now they are doing nothing. The snares of the devil are real and they are powerful. They have the ability to ruin everyone’s life.
This life is filled with pressure, problems, and heartaches. If you don’t stay right with God, you will succumb to the situations that surround you.
You could be in such a mess this time next year and you will look around and scream, “How Did I Get Here?”
Surrounded by a Snare you may have been trapped by Sin.
