II Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Growing up in a Christian school, I never liked studying. The only time I liked studying was when studying was for homework, because to me, that meant no homework! However, I would soon reap the consequences if I didn’t study. I learned the hard way during high school that if I didn’t decide to study for my tests and quizzes, I would not be allowed to participate in football and basketball. By the time I reached Bible College, I had studying down pat. It was no longer a problem for me as long as I budgeted my time wisely. But when I got to Bible College, we were required to do what were called “Sermon Outlines” and turn them in every Tuesday. All we had to do was basically turn in notes from at least 3 sermons we heard that week. Not too hard, but for some it was! It required listening, reading, and studying, but it was not difficult. I developed the habit of doing sermon outlines at every sermon I heard, whether it was on Sunday, Wednesday, chapel, listening in the car, etc. In fact, to this day when I go to church, I have my Bible and a notebook in hand to take sermon outlines with. I’ve gathered nearly 4 or 5 books total containing nothing but sermon outlines, and I enjoy picking them up later and remembering a time in my life that I could think back on, when God spoke to my heart through a preacher somewhere along the way.
The Bible clearly tells us that we must STUDY to show ourselves approved unto God. As much as you may dislike studying, it’s required of you in order for you to be a good Christian! The Bible is clear when it says “study to shew thyself approved unto..” who? God. Unfortunately, most Christians study little enough to shew themselves approved unto themselves rather than unto God. When what you are supposed to do is study the Word enough to shew yourself approved unto God of what you have STUDIED! Many Christians today read just enough Scripture to “justify” their sinful lifestyles. That is wrong, friend! The Bible teaches us! God’s Word must be our Teacher! We aren’t our own teacher when it comes to reading God’s Word! Remember, we must STUDY to shew ourselves approved unto God! Not men!
