Proverbs 31:1-2 “The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. What,my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?”
Proverbs 31 is often known for its instruction in being a virtuous woman. It is written by king Lemuel (maybe Solomon) as he remembers the instruction given him by his mother (maybe Bathsheba) growing up. It is interesting that this instruction from a mother to her son is focused so much on virtue. In verse 10 with the value of finding the virtuous wife. (Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies). The lesson on virtue doesn’t start there though. The Hebrew word for virtuous in verse 10 ( חיל:phonetic; khah’-yil), is the same word in verse 3 for strength. This queen mother is instructing her son in being virtuous. How to stay virtuous. First order of business; stay away from the ladies. This is not the time for that. Don’t chase after them physically or mentally(what you look at and are thinking about is just as important to God as what you are doing) because it will destroy you. (Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.) The name Lemuel meaning: belonging to God. This is a great lesson for you as well young man. You belong to God. Don’t throw your strength or your virtue away chasing after women. Focus on the attributes of a good king and let God prepare that virtuous woman for you and, in His time, bring her to you. Your job is to prepare to be who God has designed you to be. Don’t waste this time that is set aside for your own preparation chasing after something that you are not equipped to find. This pursuit will destroy you or taint your God given design. Don’t allow that influence to taint this process. God has a plan and a design. Stay the course! Young lady, God has a plan for you as well. Not only are you to be in preparation but you should do it in modesty. Not drawing undo attention to yourself. Your dress and your conversation. Don’t get distracted or be a distraction. Stay the course!
