Psalm number four is a psalm of David. In the beginning of the psalm, David prays, reproves the wicked, and testifies of the happiness of the righteous he then goes on to exhort sinful men to consider their sinful ways and serve God (vs.4,5) In the fourth verse David, under inspiration of the Holy Ghost, makes a powerful Statement. He says, ” Stand in awe, and sin not.” As i thought on that statement, I began to think about what it means to stand in awe. I went to Websters 1828 dictionary to look at the definition of the word. “awe” To be in awe of something means to have fear mingled with admiration and reverence. As I began to study that thought, I realized that the word awe is only mentioned three times in the Bible. All three occurrences are found in the book of Psalms. I believe it will help every person to consider the Whom and what in which we should stand in awe of.
I. Stand In Awe Of The Savior
In Psalm 33:8 the Word of God says, “Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants stand in awe of him.” As we read this verse it reveals to us the reason why our nation is in the shape it is in. This verse explains to us why so many churches are becoming more and more worldly and less and less holy. Within this verse we can see why the Christian home is falling apart. We have lost our ” AWE’ of the Savoiur. Our schools have lost the “awe’ our nation and churches have lost the “awe’. Now how did we do this because we are in ” awe” of to many things from the world. It is time we get our eyes off the world and get our eyes on God. Our Young people have been programmed to admire actors and athletes and know nothing about preachers or Gods Word. If we are to get back standing in ” Awe ” of our savior we must put him back on the throne of heart.
II. Stand In Awe Of Sin
Notice in verse five the result of Isaiah standing in awe of the Lord. ” Then said I, Woe is me for I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips for mine eyes have seen the king the Lord of hosts.” I submit to you today that when we stand in awe of the Saviour, we will also stand in awe of sin. In Psalm four David said, O ye sons of men how long will ye turn my glory into shame? How long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah. But know that the Lord hath set him apart that is godly for himself. Let us all live godly and be separate from the world.
III. Stand In Awe Of The Scriptures
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Joshua 1:8 which speaks about the importance of the scriptures, this book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth , but thou shalt meditate there in day and night that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein. for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous and then thou shalt have good success.
If we are going to stand in awe of the Saviour and stand in awe of sin, then we must stand in awe of the Word of God.
