Jeremiah 48:11 “Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel,…”
Have you ever squeezed out ketchup on your hot dog and gotten a watery surprise? It is because you did not shake it up! Have you let your chocolate milk sit for too long and found all the chocolate at the bottom? It is because you did not stir it up! You will read these words on many products, “Shake Well Before Using.” That can of spray paint will not give you a nice finish if it is not furiously mixed first. The product’s taste, flavor, scent, or effectiveness will be sub-standard unless you SHAKE WELL! (Jeremiah 48:11b) So it is with the Christian life. When we allow ourselves to get settled, comfortable and motionless, we lose our effectiveness for Christ. Jeremiah 48:11 compares Moab’s ease to settling of the wine “on his lees.” When the grape juice was not stirred for long periods of time it would build up on the bottom of the vats called lees. The juice had lost it’s rich taste because all the flavorful sediment had settled on the bottom. So are we when we allow ourselves to become too relaxed in our spiritual comfort zone. How do you know when you have become settled? I am glad that you asked. Here are some warning signs: If your Bible Reading has become boring, you have settled! If lost souls do not matter anymore, you have settled! If the news of fallen Christians causes you to gossip instead of shed tears, you have settled! IF you have become good at pointing out other’s faults while overlooking your own, you have settled! If sin has become accepted instead of hated, you have become settled! If any red flags come up signaling that settling has occurred, be sure to shake yourself spiritually right away young person.
