The Odds are Against You… So What are You Going to do?

The odds are against us as teenagers. Many times, when the world sees a teenager, not so great things come to mind. People will see a teenager and automatically pair them up with many of the wrong worldly activities that many of the teenagers in this world already do. This world is fervently after the teenager. The devil knows if he can get you to make some bad mistakes now; you will never do anything great for God later. Every wicked show, magazine, song, and drug is strongly advertised and made to appeal to the teenager. The world wants to put as much pressure as they can to get the teenager out of God’s will and to miss the blessings in his life The devil wants to catch you off guard and slowly wondering away from the pack so he can ruin your life.

Joshua 14:6-12

6 Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea. 7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart. 8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God. 9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God. 10 And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

You say that is not fair, how am I supposed to make it as a Christian teen in this world. The odds are against me. I’m just a small Christian teen living in a big wicked world. I know God commands me to live a holy life but how can I conquer this with the walled city and giants in the way.

I would say the odds were against Caleb too. This land was a walled city full of giants. The people in the land seamed to be way stronger than the children of Israel. If you would put the two armies on a roster sheet you would have gave the children of Israel no chance. How did Caleb have such an excitement to conquer this land? How did Caleb conquer this land and end up being blessed?

  1. He had a Desire. Caleb had a real desire. Caleb said “GIVE ME this mountain.” He didn’t say can we get this mountain. He didn’t say we might be able to get the mountain. He didn’t say there is no way way we can get this mountain. He said GIVE ME this mountain. No matter who was in the way, Caleb was going to get that mountain. Just as we have a desire to accomplish goals in sports, we should have that much desire to accomplish goals for God. We should have more desire to accomplish things for God. We should get a determination that nothing is going to stop us. We should make the decision that no matter what is in our way we are going to wholly follow God. 2.   He had a Direction. Caleb knew which mountain God wanted him to conquer. He said “Give me THIS MOUNTAIN.” Caleb didn’t want any other mountain except the mountain God wanted him to get. Caleb didn’t see the giants in the land and start looking for a different mountain with less problems. He had his eyes set on God’s will. If God has called you to do something or claim a mountain, Go get it! Don’t start, and then run from it because of problems. There are the same problems everywhere just with different faces and names. If God called you to be a preacher or a preachers wife, don’t settle for any occupation lower. If God called you to be a missionary or missionaries wife, don’t settle for anything less. Pray, yield your life to God, and do his will everyday; He will give you a direction of a mountain. Do not settle for any mountain except the mountain God wants you to claim. “God does not choose those who are fit, He outfits those whom He chooses” Jack Hyles3   He claimed Deities Promise of Success. It does not matter what man says a man can do. If God says you can do it, you can do it! It does not matter what man’s perspective of a problem is. God’s perspective is what matters. God always follows through with His promise. God will never let you down. God never lies. God can turn a “No way” into an “Any day all day.” God can turn the weakest of underdogs into the greatest of champions! God is omnipotent. God is greater than any problem you may have, and bigger than any giant you may face. You have no fear if God is on your side. You just need to claim His promise and put His promises to action. You will never be able to claim God’s promises until you put His promises to action.Luke 12:32 “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
  2. The odds are against you… So what are you going to do? I say we should do like Caleb and get a desire, direction, and to claim Deities promise of success. You can make it as a teenager in this world! God wants for you to make it as a teenager in this world! We just need to wake up every morning with a desire to go in the exact direction God has planned for us no matter what the world throws at us. I know you can conquer the mountain He has for you, not because of how great we are, but because of how great He is and He promises you can!
  3. 2 Peter 1:4 “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
  4. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
  5. Where God guides he provides!
  6. I love basketball. I was the big man down low in high school. My best move was to post up down low and spin with a drop step. That was my bread and butter. I also loved to take the ball coast to coast. Our team played a three-two defense with me on a block under the goal. One of my favorite things was to get a rebound and just take off to the other end to score. When I would take off, I would have such a desire and determination to score that I wouldn’t let anyone stop me. One of my teammates told me he can tell by looking at my face when I was going to take a ball coast to coast. He said my face looks super determined and funny.Just as we have a desire to accomplish goals in sports, we should have that much desire to accomplish goals for God. We should have more desire to accomplish things for God. We should get a determination that nothing is going to stop us. We should make the decision that no matter what is in our way we are going to wholly follow God.
