John 13:16 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.”
Here we have Jesus washing the feet of His disciples. He gets to Peter, and attempts to wash his feet. In an attempt to look really spiritual, Peter refuses the offer. Jesus then tells him that if he doesn’t let him wash his feet, then he won’t have any part of Him. When Peter realizes how dumb he looks, he then tells Jesus not to just wash his feet, but to wash all of him! Jesus then tells His disciples since He washed their feet, the disciples should wash each other’s feet to be servants.
The problem is, we don’t want to use towels to serve, we want to wear the “robe” of the master. We want the garnished life where people serve US. Jesus proved to be our example by instead of taking the robe of royalty, He took the towel of servitude. We must surrender to His will in order to serve in His will. If we are to be servants of the Lord, we have to drop our ambitions for God’s desires. Jesus surrendered power, prestige, and position to pick up the towel.
The disciples wanted the title “Lord,” but that is because they did not see the blessing and joy that came with the title “servant.” Forget the robe. Pick up the towel.
