Proper Order of Music

Proper order is one of the most essential truths of the Christian life. The Bible teaches in 1 Corinthians 14:40 “Let all things be done in decently and in order” Our marriages and churches are two of the greatest examples of order. It is so important that the family have the order that God set for it: God, then father, then mother, then children. That is the chain of command that God set up.

The order of the church is also important. In simple order we have God , the shepherd the pastor the undersheperd: deacons, and members. If the order of either of these institutions is wrong, an Out of Order sing could be placed on your door because you have departed from what God has taught in his Word.

When dealing with the subject of order in music, we must first consider the three main parts of a person. We are made up of spirit, mind and body. It is so important that we as Christians keep these three parts properly prioritized. The Bible says in Proverbs 11:1, A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight in his delight. ” That verse teaches that it is important that we have proper balance. Whichever part of us we feed the flesh most, it will dominate our decisions.

It is important to note here that the spirit can be fed only with spiritual food. It is sad that much Christian music today claims to be feeding the spirit but is only feeding only the flesh. The proper order for the Christian is to feed the spirit; then the mind and last, the flesh.

Just as there are three parts to us, there are three parts of music. Their order is melody, harmony and rhythm. The melody is the most important part of music because it is what communicates the message it is the tune.

Harmony is a beautiful part of music. Harmony is produced by playing on a instrument a chord which includes notes that are complimentary to the melody, or the harmony is a part which is sung by at least one person in addition to, and distinct from, the one or ones singing the melody. If the harmony dominates the song, it can take away from the communicating of the actual message.

A song cannot move without rhythm, but it is out of balance if the rhythm is dominant over the melody. Truth comes through the message which is communicated through the message which is communicated through the melody! Harmony and rhythm are essential, but no one will ever get saved because he was listening to a beat or chord. All three- melody, harmony and rhythm- are important; but as it is important for the parts of our person- spirit, mind and body- to be in order, so it is essential that the parts of music be in proper order.

Why is it then so important that music be in the right order? It is important because all three parts have direct correlation with the the three parts that make up who we are – spirit, mind and body. The melody directly affects our spirit, the harmony directly affects our minds, and the rhythm directly affects our bodies. An accomplished musician in any genre of music is as acquainted with melody, harmony and rhythm as the nonmusician is with spirit, mind and body.

Our spirit responds to the melody which delivers the message of the song. Our mind enjoys the harmony of the song. No one wants to hear a piano player get up, omit all the harmony, and play only one note at a time. We want the pianist to use multiple keys at a time to hear the chords working together to make beautiful music. The rhythm is what makes you pat your foot. its what moves the music. As we cannot exist without all three parts. I am not at all against a proper harmony or an appropriate rhythm, but we must examine our music to make sure it is in proper balance. The elements of music have to kept in proper  order. If we are going to be good Christians, in accordance to Gods Word, we have to feed the spirit and not the flesh! The Bible says in Galatians 5:16, “Wal in the spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. ”

A good beat that pleases God will produce a feeling that will not distract from the message but add to it. The melody emphasizes the beat or the rhythm over the melody emphasizes the flesh over the spirit! Rock music whole philosophy is to use the driving beat to communicate the message. That is completely wrong. That order is flesh, mind and spirit all cont

Those that listen to rock ‘n’ roll music will often say when confronted about the vile lyrics that they only listen to the music for the beat. But in Christian circles, many will say that music that they ignore the beat and listen only for the words.

the truth is that the music we let in are lives comes at a complete package. you will receive melody, harmony and rhythm-all three- at the same time weather or not you desire to do so. We need to make sure the emphasis is on the spiritual and we do not make provision for the flesh. “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.  Rom 13:14

This principle of music is a litmus test to use on all of our music. Music is a huge part of our lives, and it is important that we study what is right and wrong. Ignorance isn’t bliss, because committing sin in ignorance can be sin.
