Name That Tune

Psalm 40:3 “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall se it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”
Years ago there was a game show where contestants would have to tell you the name of a song after a certain number of notes were given. The person able to name that tune with the least amount of notes would ultimately win. Today there are lots of different songs just as there were back then. There are many kinds of music out there blaring for your attention. IT still amazes me what a hold music can have on people, especially teenagers. It is even more amazing what an influence music can have on young people’s attitude, dress styles, language and morality. Having worked with teens for many years now, I can in a few short months tell what tunes a young person has been pumping in their head. By watching their life, I can “name that tune.”
Music has a powerful way of breaking down your defenses and getting its message through to you without you even realizing it. Music stays with you quickly and a catchy melody does not take long to be part of your sub-conscience. This is why David explains in today’s passage that he had a new song after his salvation. There are two parts to a song- the words and the music. Both should be distinctly different than the world’s fleshly, sensual, beat-driven tunes. A short listen-in on your radio, CD player or head phones will reveal very quickly the tune of your heart towards God. The devil’s clever attacks come by the way of slick lyrics packaged with enticing sounds. Make sure young person that your favorite songs bring “praise unto our God.”
