Judges 3:31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
We know very little about the man Shamgar other than that he lived during some dark days in the country of Israel. Sin was rampant, God’s commands were ignored, and everyone did what was right in their own eyes. During this time God allowed sin’s awful consequences to come down in full weight upon His people. But from time to time they would realize they were suffering needlessly and would turn to back to God. God would hear their prayers (He’ll hear yours too) and would send them a deliverer. Shamgar was one of those heroes, but he didn’t have a sword or spear, just an ox goad, which was a skinny stick with a sharpened end. God did great things through Shamgar with just a skinny stick. In the very next chapter we read of the powerful general Sisera who had at his command 900 chariots of Iron. These would have been the heavy armed tanks of their day and considered to be unbeatable and indestructible. Yet because Sisera did not have the blessings of God his 900 indestructible chariots came to nothing. One man had little and it came to much and the other had a lot and it came to little. The difference was God. No matter what you have or don’t have what you and I really need is God! The next time you think to yourself there is no way God can use you or what you have just remember Shamgar and what God did with just a skinny stick.
