Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again, I say, Rejoice.”

I love ice cream, don’t you? My current favorite is Death By Chocolate. (You can find it at Kroger for only $2.50/tub.) We try to always have ice cream in our freezer at home. I think you would agree with me that ice cream is good and meant to be enjoyed. Just like ice cream, our lives are meant to be enjoyed. God wants us to enjoy living for Him – today.

We don’t know that we have tomorrow. The only time we do have is right now. We only have today. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalms 118:24) The Bible says in James 4:14, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” We are not promised tomorrow, so let’s not waste today.

If we are not careful, we can worry the day away. My pastor said, “God is so good to us, we borrow worries from tomorrow to have something to worry about today.” I heard this and thought, “This is true!” I am guilty of worrying about things that may or may not happen tomorrow. Meanwhile, all my needs are provided for today. Instead of worrying, let’s trust God. I say He has proven Himself worthy of our trust. He is in control.

Listen to the words of the Lord Jesus in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” The words “Let not” mean you have a choice. You can choose to let your heart be discouraged and troubled, or you can trust God and have that peace in knowing He has it all worked out. I heard another preacher say it this way, “Problems need permission to pester.” This is true too! Let’s not let our problems stand in the way of enjoying this one day we have.

Maybe it’s not worry that’s wasting your time. Maybe it is totally opposite. Perhaps you are a positive, hopeful thinker. This is great! I personally always seem to have a spark of hope. However, this leads me to wishful thinking, and if I am not careful, I can wish my day away.

It seems like we are always wanting to get to the “next stage” in life where we think we will be happier. For instance, a single lady may think getting married will make her happier or a married couple might think having a baby will make them happier. The truth is, we are happiest when we are in the center of God’s will, and we can enjoy each stage of life. If you are serving the Lord, you are right where God wants you. Let’s enjoy where God has us now, for now is the only time we know that we have!

I read this quote recently, “Don’t let your ice cream melt while counting someone else’s sprinkles.” Why not count your blessings instead? Let’s be grateful for where the Lord has us today and enjoy the life He has blessed us with. Don’t let your life go to waste worrying or wishing your day away. Instead, let’s serve the Lord today! Let’s tell others about how good life is with God in it so they can “taste and see that the Lord is good:” (Psalms 34:8) And let’s love our family today. At the end of the day, ice cream is still good. Life is good. God is good.
