I Didn’t Even Hear Him Leave

Here we have the beginning of a great man of God. His mother and father, prayed, sacrificed, loved God and desired to raise him in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Jdg 13:24-25

And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.

And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.

She gives birth to Samson. The child begins to grow, and even at a young age the Bible says, “The Lord blessed him”.

Verse 25 is very important…  it tells us that even then, the Spirit of the Lord began to move him.

He was filled with the Spirit, controlled by the Spirit, used by the Spirit.

Judges 13 was different than today…

Today the Holy Spirit indwells all believers-

John 14:16-17

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Fullness of the Spirit (Being Filled with the Spirit) is available to those who surrender, seek and sacrifice.

Eph 5:18

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit did not indwell believers. The Holy Spirit would “come upon” or “fill” various men throughout the scriptures at various times.

The Holy Spirit came upon and went. David prayed this prayer in Psalm 51

“Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.”

In our text passage Judges 13:25    we see that  –  The Spirit moves Samson

Even as a young person, Samson had the availability and capability of having the Holy Spirit be a part of his life.

The still small voice.  The comforter.  The teacher of truth.  The convicting presence.

The part of God that lives in us.     The Power of God that uses us.

Let’s use our Bibles for just a minute to see how the Holy Spirit worked in Samson’s life.

Judges 14:5-6             The Power to Battle

Here the Holy Spirit gives Samson the Power to rip a lion in half with his bare hands.   WOW!

Judges 14:7    He goes on down and talks to the forbidden girl.

So after the Holy Spirit gives Samson the power to battle the lion, Samson still goes the same way down to see the girl his parents told him not to see.

After God moved in his life and did a great thing, Samson turns right around and disobeys.

Judges 14:18-19        The Power to Back Up

Here the Holy Spirit comes upon Samson so that he invades a group of men, kills 30 of them, pays his debt, and leaves the city….

Having disobeyed and now married the forbidden woman, moved to the enemies land, and shacked up with the enemies people, Samson is double-crossed by a so called friend, by his wife (yes the forbidden one), and by his in laws,…
The Holy Spirit STILL gives Samson power to BACK UP and start over. He goes back to his father’s house. The place where the Holy Spirit moved him the first time.

Judges 14:20-15-12          He goes back down there, burns their farm and gets caught.

After the Holy Spirit gives him the Power to Back Up and start over again… Samson goes right back down the same mess…

Judges 15:13-20    The Power to Break Free

Here the Holy Spirit comes “mightily” upon him and he breaks free of a seemingly impossible trap. He takes the jawbone of an ass and kills 1000 men with it.

Then he is thirsty, so with the power of the Holy Spirit, he prays for water, and God turns his jawbone weapon into a travel mug. (18-19) and he is made Judge in Israel.

After being caught by the enemy, the Holy Spirit gives Samson the power to BREAK FREE and escape the trap he was in. He is a free man, set free by the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Judges 16:1        He goes down to a harlots house.

So, after the Holy Spirit comes upon him mightily to help him Break Free of the chains of the trap… He decides the best place to be is a harlot’s house?  WHAT!

Now in Judges 16 we have the most famous and well known story of Samson. Samson and Delilah.

Delilah tries 2 times to get Samson’s riddle from him. The third time, he cracks and tells her. She cuts his hair and he is taken by the Philistines…..
Samson realizes it’s a trap… gets up and WHO DO YOU THINK SHOWS UP?….

Samson gets his eyes plucked out, put in chains, marched out in front of the Philistines, made fun of, laughed at, and mocked….

Samson leans his frail body on the pillars of the building and pushes them apart killing some Philistines and himself.

Not the ending you imagined is it?

Judg 13:25-  “Spirit of the Lord began to move him”

Judg 14:6-  “Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him”

Judg 14:18- “Spirit of the Lord came upon him”

Judg 15:14- “Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him”

I would like for you to look at Judges 16:20…

And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.

“he wist not that the Lord was departed from him” –

He didn’t feel him leave-  Didn’t even know the Spirit was gone…

He didn’t even hear him leave…

Now you have the same Holy Spirit in you that Samson had…
He gives you the Power to Battle…

He gives you the Power to Back Up…

He gives you the Power to Break Free….

Most of you in here have had those moments when “the Spirit came upon you mightily”…

Yet you sit here today, cold, hard hearted, dead,

  • We Go Through the Motions-

“I will go out as at other times before”

We go to our Christian School.     We attend Soul Winning.     We keep the Dress Standards.   We maintain Obedience.

We may be Singing, May attend Camps/Conferences, Are faithful in Sunday School and even work a Bus Route.

We Teach, Preach, Serve, and go to Church and all the Youth Activities.

We Make Fake Decisions-

“and shake myself”

It is not judging, it is simple observation… If you make decisions in public, but never follow through in private, you are making fake decisions.

I am talking about those who claim to make decisions, only because it gets mom and dad, pastor, yp, and even your conscience happy for a little while….

BUT YOU DIDN’T MEAN IT AT ALL… you are the same…

Just like Samson, you think if you just shake yourself a little every now and then and make everyone think you are like everyone else, you will be ok while you run back to Timnah…

We Operate in the Flesh-

“And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.”

I am not saying you do not have the Holy Spirit. You will always HAVE the Holy Spirit. However, the Holy Spirit does not HAVE you.

He may have had you at that one conference….

At that KYF that one time…

That one year at camp…

He might have had you Sunday in church while the Preacher preached…

We are so controlled by our flesh….

Romans 8:5

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Romans 8:8-9

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

I want you to think with me… Remember the time when you were like Samson of Judges 13…

The Spirit of God moved you…. NOT just came upon and left when you got carnal…

When was the last time, the Spirit of God moved you, controlled you, filled you,

When He lost control, did you even notice?

When you say NO to God, does it even bother you?

When you ignore God’s Word, does it even stir your heart?

“And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.”
