Revelation 3:15-16“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”
God took the spiritual temperature of the church in Laodicea and gave us all
the checkup report; it wasn’t good. Remember a church is not the building but the people who make up the members. There are four tests in the checkup process when Jesus takes our spiritual temperature:
The Works Test (Revelation 3:15) When Jesus takes our temperature the first thing He looks at is what are we doing for Him and why are we doing it. We can be doing a lot of stuff but if it is for the wrong reasons then it may look hot but it’s really not. A cold heart usually produces little work and a luke-warm heart has some production but there is no enthusiasm or passion.
The Spiritual Insight Test (Revelation 3:17) These folks thought that they had it made in the shade sipping lemonade when it came to spiritual matters. They thought they were rich, well clothed and had it all figured out when in fact they were poor, blind, and a mess! Our ability to see ourselves and our actions the way God sees us is a vital test of our spiritual temperature.
The Correction Test (Revelation 3:19) I am comforted by the fact that even while luke-warm and spiritually blind, Jesus reassured them that He loved them. Jesus’ call to them was to repent, not to be saved, but to turn their lives around and go the right direction. How we respond to spiritual correction is a sure test of our spiritual temperature.
The Response to Jesus Test (Revelation 3:20) These folks were so out-to-lunch that Jesus was standing outside the door knocking to get in – awkward! When Jesus calls to you through His Word or through the leading of the Spirit or even through a devotion, how do you respond? Your reaction to His call is telling of your spiritual temperature.
