Do You Hear What I Hear?

Joy to the World is the most popular Christmas Carol of the 20th Century. It was written by Isaac Watts almost 300 years ago. (First Published in 1719) It is based on Psalm 98

Psalm 98:1-9

O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

2 The Lord hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

3 He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

5 Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King.

7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

8 Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together

9 Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

As the world waxes worse and worse, how is it possible for Christians to sing- “Joy to the World”?

Why make a joyful noise? Why rejoice? Why sing praise?  (Verse 4)

Why sing unto the Lord? Why make a joyful noise before the Lord? (Verse 5)

Why should the sea roar and the world and they they dwell therein? (Verse 6)

Why floods clap? Why should hills be joyful?

  1. The Coming “Joy to the World, the Lord is Come”

That’s what Christmas is. God with us. Immanuel.

  1. His Lordship “The Lord is Come”

Jesus comes as the deity of God living in the humanity of flesh.

Col 2:9

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

The baby we celebrate at Christmas was more than a baby with a birthday, it was God made into man.

Col 1:19

For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

When Jesus was born:

– Wise men came from the east to see and worship Him.

– Angels came down from Heaven to announce His Birth.

– The biggest star in the sky shined His way and rested over where He was.

-Shepherds hurried to see Him. Afterward, they just cried “Glory to God in the highest”

“Let earth receive her King”

I Tim 6:15

Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

“The Saviour Reigns”

Isa 9:6

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

The Lord, the King, The Saviour…. All wrapped in swaddling clothes and laying in a manger.

  1. His Lodging “Prepare Him Room”

He came to the Earth, but He came for you. Do you have room? Will you make room?

Eph 3:17

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

2 Cor 4:3-7

But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

The Lord desires to live in us. He wants to abide in us and us in Him.

Our Joy is not dependent upon how much we have or who we are, but rather what we have done with Him.

  1. The Curse “no more let sins and sorrow grow”
  2. The Curse “No more let Sins”- We are Cursed by Sin

Romans 5:12

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Sins curse is death and hell. (Romans 6:23) and every man is cursed. “and sorrows grow”- We are Cursed with Sorrow

Genesis 3:16-17

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17- ….in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

“No more thorns infest the ground”-  We are Cursed in Striving

Gen 3:16

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

Isaac Watts knew of this Curse, for he had a debilitating disease that forced him to quit pastoring because of it.

He was rejected when he asked his girlfriend to marry him. He faced opposition in and out of the church.

So why would this guy write “Joy to the World”?

The only logical explanation is that He was thinking of the answer to the curse… Christ Jesus.

III. The Cure       “He comes to make his blessings flow”

Jesus came to bring God to us and us to God.

Hebrews 1:3

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

The cure is not an absence of trials and trouble, but rather it is the presence of Christ as we travel through.

Christmas is when Jesus became flesh, and because of this He knows your trials, the ultimate of which being the Sin that separated you from God.

He was born to die so you could live.

“Far as the curse is found”

He offers His love and grace to EVERYONE.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

“Whosoever” “Far as the curse is found”

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

“ALL” “Far as the curse is found”

The cure which is Christ is offered to all men. This is why He came.

  1. The Commander “He Rules the World” “Makes Nations Prove”

It may not seem this way today with the way the world is headed, but one day. One day, Jesus will rule and reign.

Phil 2:9-11

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

It has been said that this hymn was actually written for the 2nd Coming and not for the birth of Christ.

One day Jesus is coming back and He will rule and reign with the saints. How will Jesus lead/rule? He will lead in Truth by the Book and what is true. He will lead in Grace by giving what is not deserved. He will rule in righteousness by doing what is right, and He will lead in the most wonderful love.

“The wonders of His love”

There are only 2 things you can do with His Love. You can accept it and believe on Him, or you can reject it and attempt your plan for salvation, service, and surrender

Closing:

When you sing “Joy to the World” and when you celebrate Christmas, know its about

The Coming- The invisible God of the universe became visible in Jesus Christ. “The Lord is Come”

The Curse-  He came to die for us that we might live with Him. “Far as the Curse is Found”

The Cure- He came to pay our sin debt and redeemed us back to God. “The Saviour Reigns”

The Commander- One day He is returning to rule and reign. “He Rules the World” Joy to the World!
