Broken Bones of the Believer

This Psalm is written directly after Nathan the prophet has came and preached a fiery sermon, calling out David, calling out his Sin, calling out his pride, and calling out his backsliding.

David, after this sermon, is under extreme conviction.

David had been living in his own little world. He had been ignoring the sermons he heard.

He had been forsaking his Bible reading, neglecting his Prayer life, and living a life of sin.

Psa 51:1  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

Psa 51:2  Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Psa 51:3  For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

Psa 51:4  Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

Psa 51:5  Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Psa 51:6  Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Psa 51:7  Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Psa 51:8  Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

His downfall begins with him not being where he was supposed to be.  Not doing what he was supposed to do.

Willing Disobedience. Just a minor offense in many peoples eyes.

The spiral continues with David sleeping in. His disobedience continues into Willful Disservice.

As he is disobeying God, he decides to just take the day off and sleep in.

When he gets up from his sinful slumber, he doesn’t pray, he doesn’t read the Bible, he doesn’t spend any time with God. That is Willful Disservice.

Don’t judge David. You are the same way. Do you read?    Do you pray?     Do you walk with God?

David keeps sliding as he walks upon the roof of his house in the evening. The eventide is somewhere between 3 and 6 PM. This is the time that most men would be out working . This is the time when the ladies would finish their daily chores and bathe for the day. David had a Wandering Desire.

He had not done anything all day. He was rested, idle and bored. His desire found his demise.

David’s downfall continues as he makes the decision to call for Bathsheeba. Even when a servant tells him she is married, he Willingly Disregards the Bible. Knowing what the Bible says, knowing it is a sin, knowing he would be disobeying God, knowing it will cause nothing but problems, David still chooses to Sin.

  1. Willing Disobedience
  2. Willful Disservice
  3. Wandering Desire
  4. Willingly Disregard

David’s Backsliding then gets worse. He slides from “a man after God’s own heart” to adultery, lying, killing, hypocrisy and pride.

It began by disobeying, then disservice, then lost desire, and finally a total disregard.

Then the preacher comes. And Holy Ghost Conviction comes as well.

By the way,   IF you are a saved, child of God, then Holy Ghost conviction will come after sin.

If you can sin and sin and sin and are never convicted….. You are not saved.

The preacher comes and tells David about his sin. David the backslider is under conviction.

David decides to get right with God.

Psalm 51 is David’s repentance prayer getting right with God.

Backsliding brings with it, however, some dangerous side effects. One of which is here in verse 8.

David says that in his journey into Backsliding, he has suffered some broken bones.

This evening, Im going to preach to you about the Broken Bones of the Backslider.

I. The Funny Bone

“The Bone that Makes You Laugh and Gives You Joy”

Perhaps the first bone to break in the backslider. The first thing to go when any Christian is backslid is their joy

Their happiness. Their Spirit. Their attitude. Their song. Their appearance.

The most miserable person in the world is a Christian who is backslid on God.

Mad at everyone.  Feeling all alone. Unhappy in every situation.

When with the church, you are unhappy because your heart is not right with God.

When with your worldly friends you are unhappy because you are afraid youll get in trouble.

There is no joy in serving sin.   There is no fun in backsliding

Do you know why you don’t like to sing?    Because your backsliding has broken your funny bone.

Do you know why you don’t enjoy the youth department?

Do you know why you don’t have fun at church?

II.The Shoulder Bone

“The Bone With Which Much Work is Accomplished”

When your funny bone is broken. It is not long until your shoulder bone goes as well.

When church and the things of God aren’t joyful anymore, soon you will quit and despise them.

You will not appreciate the blessings  of the School, your church, your youth department, your parents.

You will not see the need to read, pray, go soul winning, listen in church, or work a bus route.

You will not want to help, to take part, to pray, to read, to study, to obey, to keep the rules, to walk with God.

Your shoulder bone will break and your work for God will stop.

Your fire will fizzle. Your burden will bubble.     Your service will stop.

Backsliding not only breaks your funny bone, it also breaks your shoulder bone.

Backsliding first breaks your spirit. Your attitude.

Then it breaks your service. Your fire for God.  Your desire. Your “call”.

III. The Jaw Bone

“The Bone From Which Words are Spoken”

Backsliding breaks our jaw bone too.  Backsliders always talk different.

People always take the language of their surroundings.

If you are around the world all the time, you will talk like the world.

If you are around spiritual people all the time, you will talk spiritual.

When we backslide our words become dirty, vulgar, worldly, carnal, mean, smart alect, and hateful.

Our manners, our respect, our honor, our praise is gone.

Backsliding breaks our funny bone.       Our Spirit.

Backsliding breaks our shoulder bone.    Our Service.

Backsliding breaks our jaw bone.     Our Speech

IV. The Back Bone

“The Bone that Allows us to stand”

Perhaps the most saddening of the broken bones.

Young men and young ladies who have been taught right, served God, in a good church, a good home, a wonderful God.

They begin to backslide and suddenly they are not as quick to speak up for God.

They are too cool to talk about the Bible.

They are too cool to pray in front of people.

They are too cool to witness.

They are too worried about what someone else is gonna think or say about them.

I’ve seen it a bunch of times in my own life.

What happened?   They backslid and broke their back bone. Backsliding breaks your back bone.

Soon instead of standing for the Bible, you will be denying it.

Soon instead of praying and praising God you will be cursing his name.

Soon instead of witnessing to others, you will be the one pulling others down.

What happened to leaders?  Who are the leaders of this youth group?

Who still has a back bone that has not been broken by backsliding?

Who will take a stand for God?        Who will stand for God at home?

Who will stand for God at school?        Who will stand for God when your alone?

Who still has a back bone?     Who still loves God enough to stand?

I am worried about some of you.

Some of you are leaning towards backsliding. You aren’t rebellious, just disrespectful. Wrong road.

Some of you have already let backsliding break your funny bone.  Your attitude stinks.

Your spirit is terrible. You are miserable. Why???  You are backslidden.   Get Right with God.

Some of you have let backsliding break your shoulder bone. You don’t want to serve God.

You don’t like the bus, the ss class, the soulwinning. You just endure.  You are backslidden.

Some of you have let backsliding break you jaw bone. Your language is wicked.

You laugh at and tell dirty jokes. You cuss. You use the worldly slang.

You talk back, disrespect, and are mean to parents.  You are backslidden.  Get Right.

Some of you have let backsliding break your back bone. You used to stand for God.

You used to stand.  You used to be a leader for right.     You used to want to serve God.

You are backslidden.

You can heal those bones.

Get right. Confess and Forsake.
