Get Goals

1 Corinthians 9:26 “I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:”
Paul went to the Colosseum of Rome to watch sports. As he writes this, he has in his mind two sports: “boxing” and “racing”. He is saying: “If I’m going to run, I need to know where I’m going; if I’m going to throw punches, I want to hit!” What’s the lesson? YOU MUST HAVE GOALS!
Goals give you direction. “I therefore so run.” Paul knew where he was going. You can’t live your life focused only on what happens today. You need to know where you’re going: this will help you to stay focused and strong and to not give up.
Goals give you purpose. “I therefore so run, not as uncertainly.” The purpose of running is to win the race, not just to run the race. Ask yourself this question: “What do I want to accomplish, and what am I going to do to get there?” For example, if you want to help people, but don’t have any goals, you’ll never help anyone. Instead if you say: “I am going to mow five people’s lawns and I’m going to give half of what they pay me to that single mother and her children”, you now have purpose in your desire to help others. That is what goals do.
Goals give you a sense of accomplishment. “I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air.” Paul realized that he wanted to fight, not just throw punches in the air! The head of the US Special Operations Command Admiral Bill McRaven gave the best piece of advice in the University of Texas commencement graduation ceremony: “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.” Do you have goals in your life? if you don’t, start small and grow from there.
Here are some Goal Ideas:
“I will stay pure because I want to marry the right person.”
“I will do my homework and study hard because I want to graduate and learn as much as I can.”
“I will listen to preaching from true Fundamental Baptist preachers: like Tom Malone, Jack Hyles, John Hamblin, Jeff Fugate, etc., because I want to be a better Fundamental Baptist Preacher.”
Don’t live to live, get goals.
