About The Cross!

Galatians 6:14 “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”

Intro: The CROSS – a symbol of death. In the Roman culture the cross was a form of gallows used to cause agonizing pain and a horrible death. They used it as propaganda to show the world what happened when you disagreed with Rome. Little did they realize how unimportant most of their crosses would become. Little did they realize that the majority of their crucifixions would be summarized by a few sentences in an occasional history book. There is however ONE CROSS, ONE CRUCIFIXION, and ONE CRUCIFIED MAN that the world cannot stop talking about! The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ is mentioned in a countless number of books, songs, letters, articles, newspapers, and (in the modern world) online forums. There will never be enough writing about Jesus Christ either! John 21:25 says “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” WOW! Even if you could write all the books about Jesus, and I believe we should, the world couldn’t contain all the things that could be written! Friend, if you are a Christian and that doesn’t get you fired up, then your kindling might be wet! I realize that this is a diverse crowd I am speaking to today. To the unsaved person in here, this probably doesn’t get you excited, and I know why! I Corinthians 1:18 says “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” That’s why I get excited when I talk about the cross! I know what it has done for me! Today we are going to cover 3 questions about the CROSS. I hope and pray that this message will be a decision point for the lost, and a determining point for the saved!

I. What Happened at the Cross?

A. God’s Love was SHOWN – John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Romans 5:8 says “But God commendeth (directed toward, set on display) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

B. Christ’s Blood was SHED – Read Hebrews 10:1-10. Once FOR ALL! Christ shed His Blood so that our sin could be paid! He did away with the imperfect sacrifices and ONCE FOR ALL made a way that we could be saved!

C. Our Debt was SETTLED – Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Romans 3:10 11 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.” We owed a debt we could not pay, but Jesus paid our debt that He did not owe!

II. When Did You Find the Cross?

A. Accepting the Cross is Not Conditional – Romans 3:21-28 “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.” It is not the cross plus works that save you, it is just what Christ did on the cross! There are no strings attached, no courses you must take, and no priests you must confess to – IT’S JUST THE CROSS!

B. Accepting the Cross is Only Personal – Romans 10:9-13 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord
shall be saved.” Accepting Jesus is a decision from YOUR mouth and YOUR heart! It doesn’t matter what your parents, preacher, or friends pray for you, THEY can’t save you! Someone can help you pray, but the belief must come from you!

C. Accepting the Cross is Instant and Eternal

i. The Promise of John 3:16

ii. John 10:27-29 says no man can pluck us from the Father’s Hand!

iii. I John 5:11-13 “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

III. What Will You Do With The Cross?

A. The Unsaved – Friend if you have never accepted Jesus as your Saviour, Accept Him today! The debt’s already been paid! II Corinthians 6:2 says that NOW is the day of salvation! Hebrews 2:3 says “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;” You do not know about tomorrow! You may never get another chance! Accept the Free Gift given at the cross today!

B. The Saved – Back to our text verse. What do you glory in? That word glory means “to boast or to be proud of”. It’s not talking about prideful boasting, but instead Paul is making a statement that he wants his life to lift up the Cross! This is same man who said “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ!” (Romans 1:16.) Christian the cross is already yours, are you ashamed of it? Are you ashamed to be His Child? If not, then live like it!

All about Calvary,
All about mercy flowing down,
An old rugged tree.
It’s all about grace,
All about sacrifice,
Redeeming Love,
Is all about the blood, of Jesus
