Romans 12:10 “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.”
Since 9/11 there has been an incredible surge in displays of love for our country. Everywhere you go you see flags, banners and American memorabilia. “God Bless America” signs were everywhere; even some bars had the popular phrase on their signs. Who would have thought? The sales of flags and patriotic clothing was at its highest in years. The singing of “America the Beautiful,” “God Bless America,” and the national anthem are heard more than ever. Basically, it was popular to look and sound patriotic.
Webster’s dictionary defines patriotic as one who loves his country and upholds its interests. In other words, patriotism is loving you county and standing for the purposes and causes for which your country was founded. Our forefathers gave their lives, their fortunes and the sacred honor for a cause bigger than themselves. This new nation was not about them, it was about freedom for everyone. A struggling new country never would have been born without God’s divine providence and the people’s desire to work together for a common goal — FREEDOM!!!
Those early patriots can teach us what today’s verse really means. They pulled together to pull off one of the greatest upsets in history. The rag-tag colonial army should have never defeated the mighty British forces. They lived for what was best for everyone not just what benefited them. Most of us today are too selfish to be a real PATRIOT. Do not just display the colors, live the selfless life of a true American patriot.
