A Call to Holiness

Leviticus 11:45- ” For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.”

Well of course God is Holy! Duh! Is there any other kind of God but a holy kind? Well, yes, actually there is. There are some things that we just don’t get today in America that the readers of the Bible would have instantly understood. The “gods” of the ancient, pagan world were neither holy nor loving. They were petty, vile, hideous, demonic creatures that were inspired by Satan himself and were worshiped with the most barbaric and unholy practices ever conceived in the darkened hearts of mankind. Most all involved human sacrifice, some people burned their newborn babies alive to their gods like the Moabites. There were rat gods and fly gods and gods devoted to sexual immorality.

When God revealed Himself to His people, He made the distinction that He was unlike every other so called “god” in that He was Holy. This Holy God who saved us, and washed us from our sins, calls us to be holy, because He is holy. Being holy mean to be without sin; to be pure; and to be righteous, and that is the type of God we serve. God’s call to holy living is no surprise, but I do find it interesting in the Bible text that God specifically commanded His people not to eat meat from dead animals, nor to eat multi-legged insects. Now, I’m not sure about you, but I don’t  struggle with being tempted to eat animals I find dead along the road, nor the bugs under rocks.! But I do know the struggle we have in this age with porn, profanity, pop-stars, and alcoho-pops. The temptations may change but the call of God in every age remains the same: be ye holy for I am holy.
