6th Man of the Spirit

Titus 2:11-15

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

I love sports. I have grown to love volleyball because of our Christian high school sports  and of course like any red blooded Kentucky boy I love basketball. I love college basketball, especially in March. I even like NBA basketball, at least in April, May and June. If I could pick a team in basketball, I would probably go with Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James,  Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard. That would be a seemingly unstoppable team! They would no doubt win a lot! In the Christian life, we often hear about being a Victorious Christian! I wonder what kind of things we would put on the starting five of the Victorious Christian Life?

It would be a Walk With God,  purify unto himself, the Center of a Walk with God, Good Testimony, live soberly, righteously, the Shooting Guard of a Good Testimony.

Everyone sees Separation, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, the Small Forward of Separation This player does not get much of the spotlight.

Good Friends, a peculiar people, the Small Forward of Good Friends…

Church Attendance, Teaching us, the Power Forward of Church.  Rebounding people, putting us back.

Leadership, with all authority, the Point Guard of Godly Leadership, Leading Us to Victory.

Holy Spirit Fullness, purify unto himself, the Small Forward of Holy Spirit.

Godly Music, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, the Small Forward of Good Music.

Witnessing, Looking for that blessed hope, the Point Guard of Pointing others to Christ..

Assurance of Salvation, Grace of God, Self Discipline, Center of Assurance.

What a starting five! Kobe and Lebron don’t have anything on this.  This is the real fab 5 !!!

That is a great way for a teenager to be a victorious Christian! We have all of these pieces, so why are so many teenagers not “winning” in their spiritual lives. I contend it is not because of the starting 5. We have picked our starting 5. We have a great team. We know how to win.So what is the problem? Why are so many losing the spiritual battle? We have forgotten the 6th Man!  Look at your Bible, Titus 2:11-15, look at verse 14…“zealous of good works”

Added to the starting 5 is a unseen, non-player, a sixth man… A Spirit of Zeal! As simple as that sounds, it is missing from our lives. We are excited about everything except the things of God! We get pumped when it comes to so many worldly things, but its just seems like when it comes to the things of God we are bored, unsatisfied, unhappy, unexcited, and thus wide open for the Devil to attack us and pull us down.

WE HAVE GOT TO GET EXCITED ABOUT GOD AND GODLY THINGS!

It Seems The Fab 5 Has Become The Drab 5. Church, Walking with God, Soul Winning, Separation, Good Friends, Leadership that are so important to your success as a Christian have become burdens in your life. The very things that protect, bless, and help you are now just in your way, a pain, a chore, almost hated. So what happens? WE STOP!

I.     What Kills The 6th Man of Spirit

A.     Familiarity

The old statement is  “Familiarity breeds ingratitude/contempt.”  We have seen this Starting 5 so long that its old hat.  We are so used to it, we don’t appreciate it anymore. We have been in a great church so long, we don’t appreciate it anymore. We feel that there is nothing to be excited about. We have been in a youth department so long, we don’t appreciate it anymore. We feel that there is nothing to be excited about.

We have been in a Christian School so long, we don’t appreciate it anymore. We feel that there is nothing to be excited about. We have been in a good home so long, we don’t appreciate it anymore. We feel that there is nothing to be excited about. We have been saved so long, We don’t appreciate it anymore. We have had a Bible so long, We don’t appreciate it anymore. We have had the opportunity to pray so long, We don’t appreciate it anymore. We have been away from the world so much, We don’t appreciate it anymore. We have had great parents, leaders, a Pastor for so long, We don’t appreciate it anymore.

THERE IS NO REASON TO BE EXCITED ABOUT GODLY THINGS……

WE HAVE TO HAVE SOMETHING FROM THE WORLD TO EXCITE US !!!!!!

B.     Captivation

Ballgames, Fireworks, Roller Coasters,

Why cant we be excited about the things of God?

Church        Christian School    Chapel        Singing     Bible         Prayer        Soul Winning

Sunday School    Youth Activities    Camp        Bible College

We are going to get more excited about something that lasts 30 seconds than something that lasts an eternity?

II.     Without The 6th Man of Spirit

If I am not excited about Church, I will start to not like coming, I will start to look for ways to get out of the service, I will start to sit way back or in the balcony so I don’t have to listen, I will sit in the foyer, Eventually I just wont come at all.

Same is true for Sunday School. Same is true for Youth Activities.

If I am not excited about Walking with God, I will start lying about reading my Bible, I will stop praying altogether, I will start spending more time with the world and the Devil than I do with God, I will spend more time texting than I do with God.  Eventually it wont even bother me that I haven’t read or prayed in weeks.

If I am not excited about Soul Winning, I will talk on my phone and text while I’m supposed to be Soul Winning. I will joke and play around all the time instead of soul winning. I will stop coming on Wednesdays. I will start doing things on Wednesdays to get others to not come on Wednesdays. I will not visit my bus route on Saturday. I will not pray for lost souls. I wont even hand out a tract or a flyer. Eventually I wont care if someone I meet is saved or lost.

If I am not excited about Separation, I will start to question what the Bible teaches about Separation. I will correct where I think the Bible is wrong. I will start to do my own thing. I will watch what I want, listen to what I want, go where I want, talk to who I want, do what I want, I will start criticizing those who Preach on separation. Eventually I will find myself in the world with no difference between me and the world.

If I am not excited about My Good Friends, I will desire to make bad friends. I will search for friends who are into worldy and sinful things so I can learn from them. I will make fun of Godly friends, I will seek to be cool by being worldly and run off possible good Godly friends. Eventually I will find myself used and abused by the worlds so called friends.

If I am not excited about My Leadership, I will criticize the Pastor, Youth Pastor, Teachers, Principal, Mom and Dad. I will make fun, I will rebel, I will have a bad attitude, I will refuse to listen, I will decide to do my own thing, I will leave from under their authority, Eventually I will find myself under worse and even harsher authority who doesn’t love me.

III.     Don’t Forget the 6th Man of Spirit

Be excited about the things of God.

You want to know how not to quit, How to keep going, How to fight being backslid, How to stay surrendered, How to be victorious in the Christian Life?

You have to have the 6th Man…. Of SPIRIT !
