Turning a Devil into A Disciple

Mark 5

Mark 5:1-2 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

Story about the Maniac….

Verse 2-     out of the tombs- Distanced

Verse 2- unclean spirit- Discouraged

Verse 3- no man could bind him- Defiant

Verse 3-   no not with chains- Damaged

Verse 4- neither could any tame him- Disobedient

Verse 5- always in mtns, tombs- Dysfunctional Friends

Verse 5- crying- Disturbed

Verse 5- cutting himself- Destructive

In these characteristics of a cultist, you can find someone in your life…

This man represents the lost, sinners that we spoke to on Saturday..

Even the ones that were just saved this week…

A family member you are concerned about spiritually…

A friend back home who is backslidden and not right with God…

A roommate who is struggling with a sin or standard…

A bus kid who is hard to handle, disruptive, fighting…

So how do you turn a devil into a disciple….

Notice… you don’t turn a devil into a disciple by criticizing…

You don’t turn a devil into a disciple by capitalizing on their faults to feed your ego…

You don’t turn a devil into a disciple by looking down your nose, oustrisizing them,

Verse 8

I. Challenge

Jesus goes right to the man and addresses the problem…

He doesn’t go to the mans neighbor, friend, brother, sister, –  He goes to the very man and Challenges Him.

He says Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit….  Its time for a change… This is enough…

How do you get that bus kid to grow to the next level…. CHALLENGE THEM
How do you get that friend to give up that sin…   CHALLENGE THEM

How do you get that family member back to God…. CHALLENGE THEM

Go to them and address the issue.   Don’t be a gossip, backbiter, talebearer, –

Jesus challenged this man on his problem…   He didn’t beat around the bush, allow the devil to rule longer,

DON’T MISS THIS PART-

Jesus challenged the problem, not the person….

Jesus addressed the sin, not the sinner…

Jesus had issue with the struggle, not the struggler…

Jesus did not attack the man…  He did not demean the man… He did not judge the man…

Jesus dealt with the sin, the struggle, the problem…

Verse 9

II. Compassion

Jesus has compassion on the man, but also has compassion for the problem the man is going through…

So much so, that Jesus asks the Devil his name… Jesus cared about what was troubling this man…

Jesus wasn’t just trying to mask the problem the man had… adjust, conform, fake it,
Jesus wanted to know what the REAL problem was so that he could help this man have victory.

When we challenge that someone we are thinking of, we must be sure that we are full of compassion.

A care not only to bring the sinner out, but a care for how deep the sinner is in…

A compassion not only for the man, but a compassion  also for the madness the man is involved in…

A love for not only the bus kid, but also a love for the environment in which he is coming from…

A heart not only connected to students, but also a heart for the struggle they are facing in their life…

I think so often we claim we love others… when really, we love what we want them to be…

Jesus didn’t just care about this man, He cared about what this man was going through…

When you challenge those who you know are heading for a path of destruction, you must Challenge in Compassion.

Don’t just point out their sin, struggle, problems etc…

Find out what they are going through and let them know you love them right where they are… but are challenging them to become more…

On that note…

When Dr. J challenges you on your struggle…. Don’t get mad, pout, criticize, lie, hate, etc…

When the ladies challenge you on your dress…. Don’t get upset, feel unloved, or judged…

Let your leaders be able to challenge.

They are challenging you with compassion… they love you and want what is best for you…

Verse 15

III. Change

So, Jesus Challenges with Compassion… and what happens…   a change…

Thank God for the change in our lives…. Hey if you haven’t experienced any change in your life, I am challenging you no… Let God Change You!

He was sitting-    This was the guy who couldn’t be tamed, or bound…

He was clothed- Luke 8 tells us he was naked before… Now he is clothed… CHANGE

He was in his right mind- This was the disturbed, destructive, dangerous one..

Jesus comes to him, Challenges with Compassion and sees CHANGE…

Attitude Change-   He went from defiant to obedient!  That inward change- No one could tame him- but Jesus…

Appearance Change-   He went from nothing to something-  Thank God for his outward Change

Assurance Change-   He was demonically dominated, now he is Christ Centered…

What change are you wanting to see in your bus kids, friends, family, coworkers, converts,
Have you challenged them, shown compassion,  emphasized change?

Maybe that is the reason that you are not seeing spiritual growth… maybe that is why they are devils…

Maybe that is why they cant get victory… maybe that is why they are failing…

Mark 5:18

And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.

IV. Connection

The man who was possessed asks to stay with Jesus and the Disciples…

When you are helping someone to grow from devil to disciple, if they are going to sustain that growth, there must be a connection…

Who is your life connected to?   Who are you influencing?  Who are you an example to?

Have you challenged them, shown compassion, emphasized change… if you have then you should open a connection…

In School- Connection

Jrs and Srs…  you should be leading… not condemning, criticizing, complaining, and cohorting

In Buses- Connection

Bus route is more than how many… more than just salvations, more than just heads on a bus…

You should be connecting with those kids, leading, mentoring, teaching, loving, helping,

In Family- Connection

In Friends- Connection

Verse 19

V. Commission

Jesus involves the man in the ministry…Go tell them about Jesus and His Love…

There is a worker on your bus.. mr captain…  involve them…

There is a kid on your bus… involve them…

There is a friend just looking to be involved in church…

Your converts from this weekend… involve them…

By The Way…

The great commission is more than soul winning…  Preach, Beach, Teach
Win Souls, Baptize Converts, Make Disciples…

If you won somebody last week, this week should be Each One Beach One…

Next week should be Each One Teach One….

Lets not just fill 33% of the commission… lets pass the class…

He gave him something to do….

Your bus kids would come more if you involved them… instead of eyeing the girls…

Your friends would serve the Lord if you would let them do it with you…

Friends, Bus Workers…

Verse 20

VI. Conviction

Notice how this man goes and does what Jesus said… not just in his town, but in others too…

This is where we want all of our bus kids, friends, family, etc to be…

How do we turn a devil to a disciple…

Challenge

Compassion

Change

Connection

Commission

Conviction

Whoever God laid on your heart….

A bus kid, a friend, a family member, a fellow student…

Help them become what God has for them to be!!!
